Abstract
Wear resistance and frictional behavior of InZnO thin coatings deposited on an acryl substrate using an atmospheric pressure plasma jet (APPJ) method was investigated by using a reciprocating pin-on-disk tribo-tester. The results showed that the wear and friction of the ZnO coatings could be significantly improved by doping with indium. The wear rate of the ZnO coating decreased from about 82 μm3/cycle to almost an undetectable amount when 2.2 at% indium was included in the coating. The friction coefficient of ZnO coating also decreased from 0.6 to 0.17 with inclusion of 2.2 at% indium. However, further increase in the indium content led to increase in the friction and wear of the coating. This outcome was attributed to the relatively high value of coating/substrate hardness ratio. Overall, APPJ method proved to be an effective method to deposit ZnO coatings with an optimum amount of indium concentration for wear protection of acryl substrates without compromising the optical transmittance of the coating.
