Abstract

The 2000 Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) has C-band interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) instruments. Due to its relatively short wavelength (5.6 cm), the most of the radar energy is reflected by the scatterers around canopy top in the area of timberlands. This study has an objective of verifying the concept of tree height estimation in operation level. Using SRTM data and U.S. National Elevation Dataset (NED), authors compared the estimated tree heights, and for the mismatching area, ground truth data from timber inventory GIS in the region used for the verification. The result showed (1) In general, C-band InSAR is an operational source for verification of regional timber age mapping.
