Abstract

This paper presents a method and application results of twodimensional ship velocity retrieval from KOMPSAT-5 Xband SAR via Doppler parameter estimation. It is necessary to estimate both range and azimuth velocity in order to restore the information of heading and velocity of ships in coastal area. Field campaigns carried out in 2017 and 2018 with heading and speed-controlled ships for evaluating accuracy. The results showed an accuracy of 1.64 m/s with a squared correlation coefficient R2 of 0.83. The measurement accuracy is greatly improved if the size of ship is larger than 30 m, a SCR larger than 9 dB and a speed higher than 1.39 m/s.
