Abstract

Calculation of the oscillation frequencies of ions confined in a trap, which combines the static and magnetic fields of a Penning trap with the oscillating electric field of a radiofrequency trap, takes into account a possible misalignment of the magnetic field direction with respect to trap symmetry axis. The resulting ion oscillation frequencies are similar to those of a perfect trap, except that there is an `avoided crossing' near the point where the axial and upper radial frequency would degenerate without misalignment. The measured frequencies and the variation of the gap magnitude with angle is in agreement with the theoretical model and can form the basis for aligning a combined or Penning trap accurately with external magnetic field.
