Abstract

This paper explores the roles of urban design in urban regeneration through a detailed empirical investigation of urban design in Scotswood and Walker, regeneration under the umbrella of the Housing Market Renewal programme. The case studies identified various roles of urban design in urban regeneration and highlighted that urban design contributes to urban regeneration as a place-shaping mechanism. The environmental contribution of urban design was recognized as shaping better-quality places with quality design. The social contribution of urban design was recognized as providing better places for the everyday life of existing users and end users as the social consequences of urban regeneration. This paper concludes with a discussion about the potential roles of urban design in urban regeneration.
