Temperature characteristic of high-Tc coated conductor by numerical method when a fault current flows

The superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) is a protection device for an electric power system. In other to design the SFCL, the temperature of the HTS tapes should be calculated under the over-current caused by fault condition. The structure and property of HTS tape have an effect on the temperature. In this paper, finite element method is performed to estimate the temperature characteristic of HTS coated conductor (CC) under the over-current. Three kinds of CCs are modeled and analyzed with respect to the internal resistance. In order to prove the reliability of the simulation method, the results from the electrical and thermal analysis are compared with the experimental data. On the basis of results, the proposed results in this study can be utilized to design HTS CC for the SFCL.
