Retrieval error estimate for vertical ozone profiling by KSR-III rocket sounding

An ozone density profile was obtained by using the UV radiometer onboard the KSR-III (Korea Sounding Rocket-III) fired at Anheung, Korea, and the profile was compared with other observations from satellites and ozonesonde. Due to altitude limitations in this first test flight of the newly-developed system, the apogee of the rocket was in the stratosphere. This situation provided an opportunity to consider an algorithm to retrieve the vertical profiles of the ozone number density for a rocket flight whose apogee is still within the ozone layer. For measurements using optical instruments, various error sources exist in characterizing the optical properties of the detectors and the atmospheric parameters. In this paper, the errors on the retrieval algorithm are estimated quantitatively with respect to altitude. The most influential error sources among retrieval parameters are found to be the absorption cross-section and the filter response function. A +0.65 nm shift in the filter response function measurements or -0.55 nm shift errors in the absorption cross-section are found to result in a 5 % deviation in the retrieved ozone number density. On the other hand, the number density profiles are not so sensitive to the Rayleigh scattering coefficient or to the slant air column density assumed in the altitude range considered. The effect of stray light on the interference filter is also investigated.
