Abstract
In many block-based techniques for estimating motions, the block effect will be noticeable and the quality of the prediction suffers. We improved the existing variable block size matching algorithm by analyzing the motion characteristics of the successive frames. The proposed method estimates the motions only in the selected region to reduce the temporal redundancies and allocates the saved bits efficiently. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm is superior to the existing methods in terms of both PSNR and coding cost.
