Abstract

Nearly pure decagonal (d)-phase Al70Ni13Co13Si4 ingot of about 1.2 kg was prepared by conventional casting. The d-phase in the Al alloy is formed directly from the melt. During slow solidification from the melt, the alloy can develop a nearly pure single d-phase of decaprismatic morphology. The adjustment of the Si concentration and the conventional casting process is expected to make the possibilities of producing single-phase kilogram scale quasicrystalline ingots a reality.
