Abstract
Lead barium niobate (PBN) solid solution are oxygen octahedron-type ferroelectrics having the tungsten bronze structure. PBN crystals were grown by the vertical Bridgman method. The as grown crystals are transparent, and striation free. The photon concentration of PBN crystals can be increased or decreased by post-annealing depending on the annealing conditions. The existence of protons can be easily revealed by IR absorption resulting from the O-H bond stretching mode. A subsequent illumination with the reference beam revealed a clearly visible diffracted spot with the diffraction efficiency of approximately 6%. The lifetime of the fixed grating in the dark was found to be approximately 30 hours.
