Overview of paid welfare housing for the elderly in Korea

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to systemically delineate current condition and characteristic of paid welfare elderly housing and to grass the adequacy of those houses in holistic health perspective. The main research methodology is field survey. As a subordinate method review of literature was done. In this study two paid welfare elderly houses which were established after 1990 by private company in metropolitan were chosen. At field visit study an interview with project manager, recorded interview, photograph recording and short questionnaire were used. As result of this study, two communities were discussed according to three dimensions of health and the potentials of each community were discussed. It was found that current Korean elderly housing community showed lack of understanding about the ageing and elderly, lack of support environmental features for the elderly who are experiencing decline of physical, mental and social health function and lack of creative planning and design ability which can support to promote health of elderly.
