Abstract

In this paper, we propose an optimized memory management decoding method using preloading mechanism to reduce memory accessing overhead of H.264/AVC decoder. We implement motion compensation and motion vector prediction module to be executed during variable length decoding and modify sub-macroblock loading from external memory in advance by using preloading mechanism. The proposed methodology not only reduces computational complexity but also improves cache performance without any quality degradation in image PSNR performance. The experimental results show that about 36% data accessing cycle can be reduced and about 10% of cache performance can be improved.
