Abstract

Carburization of the i-AlCuFe quasicrystalline phase prepared by hot pressing of gas atomized powders was investigated at a temperature for which it is thermodynamically stable. The influence of carbon on the formation and mechanical properties of the i-AlCuFe quasicrystalline phase was also studied to contribute to the understanding of the carburization behavior of bulk icosahedral Al-Cu-Fe phase. Due of the presence of graphite paper during hot pressing carbon atoms not only gave rise to a tightly adherent carbon film on sample surface but also carbon atoms diffused into a pronounced depth of hot pressed icosahedral quasicrystalline sample.
