Abstract

A mathematical treatment has been given to define the angular momentum per photon transferred to a collimated elliptical Gaussian beam with beam waists wx and wy and wave number k incident on a cylindrical lens of focal length f, aligned at an angle of α to the axes of the elliptical mode. The orbital angular momentum is limited only by the f number and the aperture of the lens and in the visible may be as high as 10,000 A per photon. The beam propagation was computer modelled and interference experiments were performed between the elliptical beams and plane waves to enable the phase structure of the elliptical beams to be viewed directly.
