Abstract
We measured the current-voltage characteristics and optical emittance of He gas from a cathode/anode/closed tandem microhollow cathode discharge (MHCD) for mercury free panel lamp and compared its characteristics with the conventional tandem structures of cathode/anode/open cathode and anode/cathode/anode. The measured current-voltage characteristics show the positive I-V curve in the cathode/anode/closed cathode in the range of 70 to 500 Torr pressure without any current limiting resistor in each cell and higher optical radiant emittance than that of conventional tandem microhollow cathode discharge. The positive current-voltage characteristic and higher optical radiant emittance lead to the parallel operation and high luminance and luminous efficiency for the development of large area flat panel lamp.
