Abstract

This paper proposes a new battery diagnostic method based on harmonic analysis. The proposed diagnostic method applies the designed sinusoidal signal to the battery. The designed sinusoidal signal is distorted as it passes through the battery. The distorted signals contain harmonic components, which vary in amplitude and pattern depending on the degree of aging battery. In comparison with the simulation and the experiment results, harmonics profile changes between normal battery and aging battery are confirmed and represent nonlinear characteristic of the degradation of battery performance. As a result, the harmonic analysis of aging battery provides a new aging indicator in battery diagnostics.
