Abstract
Carbon assisted fracture of quasicrystals initiated without the application of external force was investigated. a number of quasicrystalline samples of the Al (-Si)-Cu-Fe and the Al (-Si)-Ni-Co systems were investigated in order to get evidence of the self-fragmentation of quasicrystals induced by the presence of carbon. The samples were prepared respectively in an arc furnace and induction melting apparatus with graphite crucible. Self fragmentation of quasicrystals were observed when carbon atoms diffused into the quasicrystalline samples, resulting in carbon atoms to the disintegration of the bulk phase ingots. The fracture surfaces exhibited a transgranular cleavage structure without trace of cleavage steps and river patterns.
