The pressure of market requirements and competition has led most companies to apply advanced planning and information technology techniques to the development of effective strategies and plans for their supply chains. This trend in turn has induced researchers to direct their efforts toward the development of new concepts and techniques in this area. The 33rd International Conference on Computers and Industrial Engineering, held in the beautiful city of Jeju, Korea, March 25–27, 2004, provided a vibrant environment for the exchange of new research directions on logistics and advanced planning of supply chains. The articles in the proceedings of the conference devoted to this topic were reviewed for possible inclusion in a special issue of Computers and Industrial Engineering . Authors of promising articles were invited to submit extended versions of their work for possible publication in this special issue of the journal. The editors of this special issue received 23 manuscripts which were then subjected to the rigorous blind-refereeing process of the journal. Of these, 12 articles were accepted for publication and included in this issue. We would like to express our appreciation to all the authors for submitting and sharing the results of their research. We would also like to thank the reviewers for the tremendous effort they generously expended to uphold the standards of the journal. The followings are the names of the reviewers. Aldin, N.
