Abstract

A lensless optical floppy disk drive which does not have any optical lens between the optical head and the phase change (PC) type floppy disk medium is developed. It is shown that writing and reading is done with no lens between the head and the disk because an information bit size is mostly limited by diffraction effect on any optical element used and so, it is inevitable for a more higher density recording that no lens should be used, and that the final optical system for a higher density optical storage will be a near field optical system.
