Abstract
In this paper, we have considered a problem of maximizing lifetime of a wireless ad hoc network. There have been similar approaches in the literature. However, to the best of our knowledge, those approaches are based on rather simplified assumptions, in particular ignoring interference generated by neighbor nodes or other ad hoc networks. Our study here starts from a system model that considers the signal to Interference ratio and incorporates it into a variable data rate on a link. We have found mathematical similarity between the lifetime maximization and the classical power control problem arising in cellular radio systems. With this finding, we can develop an Iterative algorithm for lifetime maximization, which is mathematically similar to distributed power control in cellular systems. Numerical examples are included to illustrate how our algorithm could be applied to lifetime maximization. Also, with the help of our approach here, we could get Insights how the transmission power of each node could affect the lifetime of an ad hoc network.
