Empirical Evaluation of Relationships in a Proposed Perceptive‐Boundaries Paradigm

This article presents an evaluation of relationships in the perceptive‐boundaries paradigm. The paradigm encompasses previous work in sociopsychological aspects of housing and provides a conceptual basis for integrating prior findings into a holistic model. Perception of adequate housing is based on culture, experiences, norms, and values. Perceptions are believed to filter one's view of the housing environment and influence both housing preferences and housing satisfactions. Relationships and linkages are explored between family, neighborhood, and housing characteristics and the satisfaction and preference variables. Three of the five null hypotheses tested were rejected in full, and two were rejected in part. Complete evaluation of the model requires multivariate analyses of the overall relationships. Analyses reported in this article support the potential usefulness of the framework and provide a foundation for more powerful analyses of the theoretical model. 1994 American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences
