Abstract

A new photoalignment material, PMI5CA, poly{N-(phenyl)maleimide-co-3-[4-(pentyloxy)cinnamate]propyl-2-hydroxy-1-methacr ylate}, was synthesized and the electro-optical (EO) characteristics in the vertical-aligned (VA) photoaligned liquid crystal display (LCD) were studied. Excellent voltage-transmittance (V-T) characteristics were achieved in the photoaligned VA-LCD with polarized UV exposure in an oblique direction (θ = 60°) on PMI5CA surfaces. The transmittance of the photoaligned VA-LCD decreased with increasing UV exposure time. This suggests that the decrease in transmittance in the photoaligned VA-LCD may be attributed to the dissociation of the ester linkages in the cinnamate structure which are photodimerized witch increasing UV exposure time.
