Abstract

We have investigated the effect of molecular structure of weakly rubbed organic solvent soluble polyimides (PI) with trifluoromethyl moieties on polar (out of plane-tilt) anchoring strength and the surface ordering of nematic liquid crystal (NLC), 5CB. We have found that the polar anchoring strength of 5CB is dependent on the molecular structure of these unidirectionally rubbed PI surfaces. Also, we have clearly observed that the polar anchoring strength of 5CB strongly depends on the surface ordering of weakly rubbed PI surfaces.
