Abstract

The solubility of silver in the MO-B2O3 (MO = CaO, BaO, and Na2O) and CaO-RO (RO = SiO2 and Al2O3) slags was measured at high temperatures to understand the thermodynamic behaviour of silver in molten slags and to obtain the measure of basicity. The dissolution of silver both into the acidic and basic slags at Po2 ≤ 10-13 atm is represented by the following reactions: Ag(1)+ 1/4O2(g)=Ag+(slag)+ 1/2O2-(slag) (in the acidic slags) Ag(1)+O2-(slag)=Ag2-(slag)+1/2O2(g) (in the basic slags) The dissolution of silver into the basic slags at Po2 ≥ 10-13 atm is represented by the following reaction from the effect of slag basicity and oxygen partial pressure on silver solubility. Ag(1)+1/2O2(g)+O2-(slag)=AgO22-(slag ) The viscosity, which is affected by slag basicity, can be quantified by introducing the basicity scale obtained from silver solubility in the slag.
