Abstract
This chapter addresses an issue of prime importance to academics, yet one that is not addressed formally in any training situation. To function in an academic research career, one must learn the practicalities of publishing and disseminating research results in such a way as to maximize impact on the field and on one's own research career trajectory. The chapter advises on how to direct and choose publications by prioritizing topics, and by selecting journals based on prestige, size of readership, publication practices, and scientific influence. Issues covered include authorship, conference presentations, and archiving and sharing data.
