Design of shared medium ATM switch targeted to support broadcasting DSLAM

This paper presents a design of the new architecture of ATM switch for broadcasting DSL4M (Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexer). We design the broadcasting DLSAM system architecture and the specified core switch for the DSLAM. The proposed switch consists of a set of basic switching units, named by "SM (Switch Module)", and each SM constitutes a virtual ring to share the medium. The SM is composed of two core units, QMM (Queue Management Module) and MPM (Message Passing Module). QMM performs traffic control, routing and interfacing. MPM performs medium access control and flow control. The Proposed architecture can reduce the routing time of incoming broadcasting cell. The efficient hardware architecture is proposed and was simulated in VHDL. The test system was implemented on FPGA chip in real time mode, and performed successfully.
