Abstract

In this paper, a design and an optimization process of a linear generator for a wave energy converter (WEC) are studied. The linear generator is a crucial factor in planning a point absorber type WEC because of its vertical linear motion. Firstly, to design an adqeuate generator for the WEC, the generator force and the voltage equation are analyzed to derive the required magnetic flux, the thrust force and the current. Then, the stator core structure for satisfying those parameters are determined and an initial model is established. A finite element analysis (FEA) is conducted to verify the performance of the initial model. To improve the voltage distortion and reduce the detent force and the weight of the translator, a response surface optimization is applied. The optimal model's improvements are compared with the initial model for proving the feasibility of the overall process.
