Abstract
This paper describes construction of characterizing system for cough jet with saliva droplets produced by human expiratory activities, i.e., cough and speech. The characterization system utilizes the particle image velocimetry (PIV) for visualization of a cough jet flow. For the validation of new system, preliminary test was performed by 26 subjects cough and speech experiment. The averaged results of jet velocity by cough showed the comparable values with other researchers. In addition, a cough simulator was developed for producing a repetitive and controllable coughing flow. In future work, we believe that further data analysis of PIV measurements and optimization of operation parameters of the cough simulator based on PIV experiments will give more hints for understanding the aerodynamic properties of a cough jet flow.
