Abstract

We fabricated an acoustic composite structure consisting of a periodic array of interspaced membranes and side holes. This medium exhibited negative phase velocity and double negativity for frequencies below a cutoff frequency. Above the cutoff frequency lies a stop band where the medium is single negative and waves are of evanescent type. The double negative spectral range in this structure is very wide, which can not be understood in terms of the resonance of the unit cell elements. We present physical principles for this special type of double negative spectral range.
