Abstract

In this paper, we present research trends of communication protocols in wireless sensor networks (WSNs) focusing on application services' traffic condition features. We first outline the application services' traffic condition features and design challenges for communication protocols in WSNs. Focusing on these traffic condition features, synchronous and asynchronous MAC protocols, flat and hierarchical routing protocols, cross-layered protocols in WSNs are studied and their performances are evaluated. Finally, we highlight critical requirements for communication protocols design of WSNs considering these application services' traffic characteristics and discuss future research directions.
