Abstract

The objective of this study is to investigate the oxide film characteristics formed on SA106 Gr.B and SA335 P22 in a flowing alkaline solution. A porous magnetite was formed on SA106 Gr.B, while a compact iron oxide containing some amount of Cr was formed on SA335 P22. The oxide of SA106 Gr.B revealed a higher Gibbs free energy of formation reactions, solubility, point defect density, double layer capacitance, and lower charge transfer resistance compared to that of SA335 P22. The corrosion resistance of the test materials was well correlated with these oxide properties.
