Abstract
Lead barium niobate (PBN) crystals were grown by the vertical Bridgman method in which a self-seeded technique was employed because PBN single crystal seeds of suitable size were not available. The problem of preferential loss of PbO was solved by sealing the Pt crucible prior to growth. Growth experiments were focused on compositions between Pb0.6Ba0.4Nb2O6 and Pb0.5Ba0.5Nb2O6. As-grown crystals were transparent, although individual single crystal grains were still only of millimeter size because of poor grain selectivity in the PBN system. Results showed that PBN is quite promising for holographic data storage and other nonlinear applications.
