Abstract

The effects of carboxylated random copolymer (poly(styrene/alpha-methylstyrene/acrylic acid, SAA) on poly(butyl methacrylate) (PBMA) latex film formation have been studied using atomic force microscopy (AFM). The PBMA latex particles packed in face-centered cubic (FCC) structure and the number of holes and cracking appearing on the latex film surface increased with aging time. In the presence of SAA, the domains of random arrangement of particles in the film have been found and the peak-to-valley distance was higher than that of PBMA dispersion. These results can be interpreted in terms of the nature of the colloidal interactions between particles and adsorbed polar SAA on the latex in the film formation stage.
