Abstract

Millimeter-wave is recognized as the only solution that will solve the data explosion of 5G era. In this paper, we design and develop a low cost but high performance antenna module for Cellular Access Point (CAP) that operates for 73 GHz signals. The traditional antenna array is connected by coaxial cables. However, the size of the coaxial cable should be extremely small, hard to produce and in result causes high cost, because the attenuation of preferred an electromagnetic wave in the coaxial cable is very significant for high frequencies such as millimeter wave. In this paper, we fabricate waveguide of WR-12 standard to connect the array antenna sticking it to the back of the ground plane. Antenna array, transmission antenna and adaptor of wave guide are manufactured in all-in-one manner, which reduce the attenuation. The proposed antenna module improves the efficiency and the realized gain of the antenna significantly. Experimental results show that the gain is as high as about 15 dBi. We believe that this study presents new understanding on the effect of the waveguide and the all-in-one antenna array.
