Abstract

U.S.-China competition is becoming intensified in the Asia region. Much
scholarly discussion has taken place in order to explore the security and
economic dimensions of the U.S.-China competition. This study aims to analyze
the U.S.-China dynamics since the United States' rebalancing strategy and
China's “One Belt and One Road” Initiative. In particular, this study compares
the foreign policies of the two countries after the United States announced
"Pivot to Asia" strategy in 2011. This study contends that the U.S.-China
competition is a representative means of soft balancing, categorizing their
foreign policies into: territorial denial, signals of resolve to balance, entangling
diplomacy, and economic strengthening. This leads to a conclusion that the
U.S.-China power transition is highly improbable, but soft balancing, a
conceptual product from the balance of power theory, will gain prevalence
in a wide range of issues.
